Merton Sustainable Development

Buildings account for about 43% of all the UK’s carbon emissions and can also damage the environment through poor waste management or inefficient use of resources.  The UK government acknowledges change is required, and has introduced measures to help reduce carbon emissions from buildings and make sure that planning policies help to protect and improve the natural and built environment.  But, policies need to be put to practice by local councils.

The latest IPCC report should be a wake-up call.  Planning plays a vital role in reducing UK carbon emissions.  Merton Council claims to be one of the greenest councils in the UK, but in practice still favours "traditional" houses over modern sustainable designs.  This attitude must change.

We wish to show support for building Mertons first sustainable house.  A previous application was refused by Merton Council because the modern, low carbon, high-performance sustainable home wasn't a copy of the neighbours houses.  We hope to demonstrate that people care about the environment and that there is wide support for building modern zero-carbon homes.
